Palmetto details

Palmetto is an American born and bred soft leaf buffalo. Palmetto is a creeping type of grass that creeps over the surface so it can be edged easily, unlike other creeping grasses that can travel underground and are hard to keep out of the garden. Because it is a creeping grass it loves the summer but won't do as well in the winter. However, in most cases it will retain some winter colour. This will improve with age.

Palmetto is extremely drought tolerant, it grows better in the summer than the winter. Being a very drought resistant turf, Palmetto will not like excessively damp conditions that are in a shade environment.

Climate

Climate for Palmetto Palmetto is a warm seasons' grass, it will stop growing during the Winter months and may lose some colour. The discolouring can be overcome by oversewing with Ryegrass seed through the winter months. The seed will provide good winter colour and wear. Alternatively, you can use a protective colour coating, this will give the appearance of green through the Winter months as well as provide some frost protection. Please contact Lilydale Instant Lawn for further information.

Maintenance

Maintenance of Palmetto Mowing Palmetto is an easy task. The first mow can be undertaken as required. During the cooler months Palmetto requires little mowing. During the warmer weather, mowing may be necessary every 2 - 3 weeks. Palmetto should be maintained at about 40mm to give a beautiful soft feel to the lawn. Never mow your Palmetto under 40mm.

Watering

Watering Palmetto Once Palmetto is established, it requires much less water than the other varieties of turf. Along with Sir Walter, Palmetto is our most drought tolerant turf. Where Palmetto is in a shady position, it should be kept longer at all times to allow more leaf growth to compensate for the lack of sunlight, and watered less frequently. In conditions where the soil is limited it may need more water. But generally a light water every fortnight.

When purchasing our Palmetto you are supplied with a Low Water Establishment Pack, which includes organic water saver, water crystals, fertiliser & seasol. This assists the Palmetto in its initial establishment stage in relaiton to water penertration & helps retian moisture.

Fertilising

Fertilising Palmetto Generally Palmetto only needs to be fertilised in the Spring and Autumn. It is a good idea with the Autumn feed to fertilise in March and again in April. A maintenance feed during the Summer will keep it strong and healthy. Note: Fertiliser requirements vary depending upon the nutrient levels of your soil.

Lilydale Instant Lawn offer a 10kg bucket of Sir Walter Fertiliser for $50.00. The 10kg bucket will fertilise approximately 400 square metres of turf. You are welcome to purchase the Sir Walter Fertiliser from our farm at 30 Bottings Lane, Yarra Glen Melways Reference: 267 J4. We offer free delivery of our Sir Walter Fertiliser to selected metropolitan suburbs.

Preparation and Care for Palmetto

Soil Preparation

Soil preperation for Palmetto It is important to have a well worked friable base on which to install your turf. This can be achieved by rotary hoeing if the existing soil is suitable or by the addition of topsoil if there is little or no useable soil. Remove all stones and debris. Rake the entire area to ensure there is a smooth even surface, allowing about 25mm below paths and driveways for the thickness of the turf.

Turf Laying

Laying Palmetto It is important to note when laying your Palmetto, to lay the turf flat with the edges butted up together but not overlapping or squashed into each other otherwise you will use more turf than necessary and it will also cause the turf to dry out quickly.

It is vital that once you lay your Palmetto that you top dress it with sand (approximately 1m3 to 100 square meters). You may also roll your turf after top dressing to achieve maximum soil contact.

Watering

Watering Palmetto It is essential that watering of Palmetto commences immediately upon installation. A thorough soaking of the turf is required. For larger installations, watering should commence as sections are completed. It is vital that the turf is kept moist until root growth is established. This can be checked after 7-10 days by lifting a small corner of a roll. Once root growth has commenced watering can begin to be spaced. It is better to water in the morning and through the day rather than in the evening.

Mowing

Mowing Palmetto Mowing Palmetto is an easy task. The first mow can be undertaken as required. During cooler months Palmetto requires little or no mowing. During the warmer times mowing may be necessary every 2 - 3 weeks, however this will vary depending on how much you water it and the weather conditions. Palmetto should be maintained at about 40mm to give a beautiful soft feel to the lawn. Never mow your Palmetto under 40mm.
If you are putting your Palmetto in a shady position it is advisable to mow it slightly higher, this will help compensate for the lack of sunlight. Also water it less frequently, Palmetto does not like to be in a damp, shady environment.
